INDEPENDENCE AVE.
MASTERPLAN
KANSAS CITY, MO
The cities we build end up building us.
Independence Avenue in Missouri is one of the most dangerous streets in the United States. Plagued by vandalism, prostitution, drugs, and theft, the corridor is fragmented and vacant. The project is driven by the realization that high-density development can turn problematic conditions into positive attributes. It concludes that tactical interventions at critical locations and activation of underutilized spaces can transform the larger urban fabric. Urban space is redefined as an infrastructural reserve, a productive agricultural territory, and a hybrid of a public domain where utility and communal life cyclically exchange.
