The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Chase County, Kansas is an 8,500 square foot Visitor Center and Administrative Facility. It houses a lobby, information desk, exhibit space, interpretive sales and bookstore, multipurpose room, office, storage, and restrooms as well as an adjacent administrative facility. Circulation pattern is easily identifiable with the ramps, stairs, and walkways.
The zero-energy building utilizes solar energy, on-site water reclamation system, and geothermal heating and cooling system. The roof, which consists of sun tracking solar panels, also collects sufficient rainwater to clean and run the facility for the whole year. The facility aims to meet LEED Platinum standards and Living Building Challenge.
